I honestly enjoyed taking this class a lot. Sometimes it’s
hard to be creative on the spot when somebody asks you to be creative, but I
liked it. It was overwhelming at times to get the blogposts and assignments
done on time, but most of the time I ended up making things I was proud of. I
like that the assignments are things that we can take with us later.
My gif from early on in the semester, for example, was
something I was really proud of. I had not worked in digital art for a while
and it inspired me to keep practicing again. There was something about altering
a photo to give it a completely different feeling that made me so happy.
I was also very proud of the podcast I created with
Savannah. It is so satisfying going from the feeling of “Oh god, what are we
going to do” to an actual podcast that made sense and was pretty well put
together. While I have not finished the video project completely yet, I feel
like I’ll have the same feeling when that assignment is done too.
I don’t consider myself a writer, but I do consider myself
an artist. One of my favorite things in the world is having an idea in my head
without any idea of how I will accomplish it, working it out along the way and
then somehow finding myself at the end with a finished product in my hands and
being proud of it. I find those moments in sculpting, music, and pretty much
every other creative hobby I have ever picked up which is why I always stick
with those hobbies. With writing, I know it’s the same thing, but I have never
had the motivation in me to sit down and write. Taking this class meant I
needed to sit down, come up with storylines, tap into my desire to write, and
push past the lack of motivation In the end, I was able to produce, or help
produce, pieces of work that I was proud of like the podcast and (hopefully)
the video project.
I’ve learned a lot of things from taking this class. And it
wasn’t just useless information like some of the things I’ve learned in my
other classes. In this class, I learned how to make a gif and I will probably
be using that in my future just because of my interest in digital art. I also
learned how to make a podcast which is pretty useful information to me as I
think I might be the kind of person who at some point in their life would make a
podcast show of just talking with my friends about life. I mean I could
genuinely see myself doing that for fun, so it’s nice that I know how to make a
podcast now!
Speaking of podcasts, I wasn’t very exposed to many kinds of
them before taking this class. I’ve listened to a few where people just talk about
life and I’ve also listened to a few where people sit and give a review on an
episode of a TV show, or a movie, or a book. I hadn’t realized how cool and
interesting fictional podcasts could be. Now I’d like to listen to more
podcasts that are set up like a screen-less TV show like Homecoming.
I think I would still like to learn how to write better, or
at least be more confident in my writing and the things that I create. I’m kind
of interested in taking a traditional creative writing course as well just because
it would focus more on writing in different genres and would give me a reason
to write more. Writing is something that I struggle with a lot. I’m not
necessarily bad at it, but I don’t do it very often and I lack confidence in my
work when I do. I’ve been a musician for 9 years and I still barely write songs
because I hate most of the lyrics that I come up with. If I do write songs,
they’re just instrumentals. Maybe I need more practice or maybe I’m just not
meant to write lyrics, but it’s something that I do want to explore more.
I would also really like to explore digital art a lot more
as well as audio production. I had some experience in both before I started
taking this class, but I was reminded how much I loved it through some of the
assignments we had in class.
Overall, I enjoyed my time in this class because of the people I met and the portfolio
of work I got out of it.
Dear Alexandra,
ReplyDeleteYou're right to note that this class covered a lot of ground, and students were asked to do a lot. You rose to the challenge with every assignment, and set an example for other students. I am glad that these skills will be transferable--you can now at least make the claim that you have multimedia production experience in the audio and visual world. The writing part of creating a project is difficult, but my hope for this class is that we wouldn't focus too much on the mechanics of a project (i.e. grammar, punctuation, etc.), but more on getting coherent thoughts on the page, and figuring out how to regularly meet a word count deadline. If it's okay with you, I would like to use some of your work in future classes, including the podcast and the gif. I haven't watched your video yet, but if it's anything like what you've already produced, I imagine it's top -notch. Keep writing, keep creating, keep your voice alive and thriving.
