Mini Video Project

Word count: 546

Using some of the material I gathered in class last Thursday as well as some extra footage, I created a very rough video to help me figure out which direction I’d like to go in with my actual video project. I just focused on a couple details from my time being bedridden, but I probably won’t include some of them when I make my full video. I used this assignment as a little refresher for iMovie.

First of all, the music I used in the background was a small instrumental I wrote and recorded for my friend’s movie in high school. There’s really no significance to it, but it was what I had available on my iTunes while making this.

In the first part, I show a quick overview of my bedroom. In my video project, I plan to have videos zoning in on specific details of my bedroom while I tell the story in a voiceover. I included this broad panorama shot in this mini video to show the general theme of my room. I want to emphasize the blues and beiges.

Speaking of blue, the next thing I included in my mini video was a picture of the sky that I took by the academic building on Thursday. I included this because when I think about the time I was bedridden, my mind just thinks of all shades of lighter blue. I assume this is because of the color of my room. Even though I repainted my room about a year into being sick, the old color was a vibrant blue. Blue isn’t even my favorite color, but I seem to just get drawn to it.

The next thing I included was a picture of Milledoler hall that I took on Thursday. I was drawn to Milledoler because of the bright red door which reminded me of my neighbor’s house. From my bedroom window, I have a perfect view of my neighbor’s house and their bright red door. I always loved that door. I’ve ended up memorizing the view from my window and that door just brought a nice touch of color to the view.

I’ve also included a couple of short clips of the view from my bedroom window to this mini video. The first one was of a woman walking her dog in front of my neighbor’s house, though you can’t really see the bright red front door in this. The second is a view of the front porch with a time lapse of the cars passing by.

The last video I included was of the people walking in front of the academic building. I took this on Thursday during class as well. I thought it was an interesting thing to include because it was the exact opposite of what I did when I was bedridden. After being alone in a room for most of that time, coming back to school and seeing so many people in the midst their busy lives was extremely overwhelming. Having a busy life myself was extremely overwhelming and it still is. I still find myself shocked at the fact that I’m one of those people just trying to get from one class to another and living a normal life, even after almost four years of remission.

  1. Dear Alexandra,

I like that you were able to integrate the two assignments, so that your footage from class was useful in some ways. I also like this idea of seeing the world only through your window--how your view of life changes when it shrinks and literally becomes a window only. I think looking at the comparisons between being bed-ridden and being free can be useful. Keep an open mind too--you may discover that the footage from Thursday won't make it into the final piece. Think mostly about your audience----how to keep them visually engaged and how you might use narration to tell your story. One technical note: it wasn't until 16 seconds in that the video snapped into focus. See if you can make all of your videos clean and crisp. Nice work.

  2. So. Teach me how to play guitar. That was so pretty. Secondly, I just love how simple the idea of this red door is, but how powerful too. It was something that was just there every single day but carried so much more weight than that if you think about it long enough. Love this.
